A==Population== The total population estimate for Northern Ireland as recorded by the UK Census 2011 was 1,810,863 of whom 887,323 were men and 923,540 were women. This is an increase of 125,800 (7.5%) over the ten-year period since the last census.

Languages spoken

In 2011, the census results indicated that of the resident population of 1,735,711 aged three and over, the English was the main language spoken by 1,681,171 (96.9%). For 3.1 per cent (54,500) of residents, aged 3 years and over, for whom English was not their main language, the most prevalent language was Polish spoken by 7,700 people, (1.0%). Irish Gaelic was ranked fourth with 4,164 (0.24%) speakers, behind Lithuanian which was spoken by 6,250 (0.36%).[1] However, it is worth noting that some 65,900 (3.74%) can speak, read, write and understand Irish and nerly 185,000 (10.65%) have reported having some ability in Irish.Italian came last which was spoken by 2,005 people.[2]

Age

According to the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Authority the average (median) age increased from 34 years to 37 years between the 2001 and 2011 Censuses. Over the same period, the share of the population represented by children aged under 16 years fell from 24 per cent to 21 per cent, while the proportion of people aged 65 years and over rose from 13 per cent to 15 per cent.[3]
